My first Kids Clothes Week Challenge creation. These are the pocket pants pattern from Meg’s book Growing Up Sew Liberated. I sewed a size 3T given her recommendation of sizing up for cloth diapers.
This pattern is excellent, full of lovely little details like the bias-binding around the pockets and contrasting waistband. There is so much reinforcement going on when sewing the “No Itch” seams, that these are truly built to last.
I really appreciated her method of attaching the pants cuffs. It’s simple yet brilliant really, as the cuffs can be let down as the child grows, extending the life of the pants.
Yeah. No letting down necessary in this house. I could tighten the elastic and shorten the pants (or…any ideas?), or save these for the future. What do you think?
Pattern: Pocket Pants from Growing Up Sew Liberated (size 3)
Fabric Main: men’s repurposed cargo pants (I had to do some slight piecing to make it work)
Fabric Contrast: Organic Fox in the Henhouse Print from Monoluna via Bolt
What are you sewing yo!?!

they look great, even if a teensy bit long
I made this pattern in a size 4 and I found they were way too big in the crotch area, like they looked weird big. Maybe it was me. I definitely am doing cuffs like that from now on though.
Also, the sewing deets at the bottom of the post is awesome!!

Thanks Meg! And especially for the tip about the crotch area being weird-big, I’m glad it wasn’t just me. He’s wearing a double-stuffed cloth diaper in this pic and they’re clearly extra huge. Perhaps he’ll fill them in as he grows! I’ve already cut out a size 2 and I’m quite anxious to see how the next attempt fits.
Foxy!!! They look great, if a bit big. I am currently working on a pair. I am so glad I cut the 2T, especially because Jude isn’t wearing diapers very often any more. I think I’m too lazy for the no itch seams though, I hope that doesn’t make me a bad mom.

When I made these for Joe in a 2T (he wears 2T in RTW), I actually thought the pattern runs big, especially on length! But he seems to be getting taller by the minute, so I think they’ll be just right before I know it.
These are adorable! If you really want them shorter, you could unpick the cuffs, lop off some fabric, and sew them on again. Or you could do what I do, and just roll them up.

Oh those pants are adorable. Love the fox in the hen house fabric. I mean I would make something for myself with that fabric. Awesomeness.

I love your pants!!! the details and fabric are perfect. I have the Growing Up book too, but haven’t had a chance to attempt any of the projects. I am glad I found your blog!
I kind of love it when I make something too big because it’s a like a handmade freebie a few months down the road. These are an extra cute freebie, love those foxes!
You have inspired me to make a pair for my hard to fit son. He’s a tall 3 year old with a 2 year old waist!
Oh good! I think this pattern will work great for your son.
Or you could let him walk around with them really long and the extra fabric could clean your wood floors…
