Amy’s latest Tie One On apron theme: movies, was a very special one for me. I selected Sally Field’s apron from the 1984 film, Places in the Heart.

And in entirety:

Back in 1984, my Mom, aunt and grandmother saw this film and were blown away by the 1930’s-style aprons that were featured. They got replicas and at Thanksgiving that year, they took their first “Apron Lore” photograph together.
This became a tradition in my family, to take a photo of the women in their aprons on Thanksgiving Day. There is even an album (two actually) dedicated to the annual photo.

I used a special piece of vintage fabric from my Mother’s stash, one that she has saved for over two decades for a Thanksgiving table cloth, but chose to split it in half for my sister and I last year. I also used my Mother’s go-to apron pattern, Simplicity 7974, published in 1968. She originally purchased it to make an apron for her grandmother.

Happy Sewing!

Thank you Kendra!
Go the women! What a funky tradition. We don’t usually celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia, but I’m thinking that it has so much going for it… not least of which is obviously, being thankful… that we might follow you guys and have our own little thanksgiving… and what a great tradition your family has added in. Thanks for the inspiration! grace
love that tradition of taking photos of the moms/ladies in their aprons at Thanksgiving! What great memories those albums must bring back. Your apron turned out great. That’s the kind of apron I need…full coverage! Have a great week!
This is awesome, Kimberly, and I LOVE your yearly tradition of Thanksgiving apron photos. I might just have to steal that one…
This is so awesome. I haven’t even seen the other entries yet, but you should clearly win. Those pictures are so perfect! And the story behind the whole thing? Too good. Now you can be in the picture this year!

Oh you look so beautiful. But also my granny and grandma had aprons like that. They called them “housecoats”. Lurve it!

This is great. I love the apron stories–must be why you love the aprons too. I’ve always wanted to try one of Amy’s challenges, make I’ll come up with a fall entry!
