Welcome to my little corner of the world! This blog chronicles my journey to appreciate the beauty in everyday life, and to lead a simpler, healthier and greener lifestyle, one bambino step at a time.
A little more than a year ago I discovered that I was about to become a mother and my very stressful, work-centric lifestyle, fueled by too much take-out, booze, and shoes, was flipped on its head. Like all parents-to-be, I began to seriously evaluate all aspects of my life and tried to imagine how a baby (gasp!) would fit into it all. I discovered that the environment I had been living in was not exactly conducive to child rearing. Not that I had been living in a Transpotting-esque habitat, but I began to crave something….better.
Instead of walking around in little habit circles, I started taking teensy-tiny steps in another direction. I took my head out of the sand and I became aware of what I was spending my hard-earned dollars on, where things are made, how those products come into our country, which stores I patronized, and what impact that has on myself, my community, my planet. I started reading labels and noticing more of what I put into my body was unpronounceable than not. Basic cause and effect stuff I know, but it opened my eyes to how I had been living and this newly acquired cognizance seriously reevaluated my priorities. Fast forward ten months and a natural birth later, I found myself a stay-at-home mother – light years away from the crowded bars, high heels and looming deadlines from a past life.
Now, I’m not going to spin you a tale of how I’ve managed to live entirely off the grid or comment on the evils of corporate America, blind consumption, and mass media (although, have you watched FOX News? Holy Toledo!). I just realize that I have a choice in how I live my life and that I have a little shadow now that quite literally, watches my every move. I don’t claim to live a perfect “green” life; I still get Starbucks more often than I’d like to admit and living on one income means trips to the Big Box stores are inevitable. This blog is simply about things that I find neat and the small steps I make in my day-to-day life to live…better.
