make herbal hand sanitizer

Leave a comment on this post for a (seriously, ridiculously good) chance to win this bottle!

While I don’t overly worry about having clean hands, mainly because over-sanitizing isn’t great for the immune system, it never fails that when we’re out and about, away from a sink, my little Turkey Buns needs a diaper change. Or wants to play with street trash…and then take a snack break. Hand sanitizer to the rescue!

Traditional hand sanitizers contain all sorts of nasty ingredients. For me, asthma attack-inducing ingredients. Non-toxic herbal hand sanitizer is ridiculously easy to make and requires only two ingredients: water and essential oil.

To make, simply fill a one-ounce pump bottle with water (I get mine locally at Mirador), and add 18 drops of pure antibacterial essential oils such as tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus (find more suggestions here). I use Aura Cacia’s First Response blend- it smells* amazing! A bottle of this is perfect to throw in your purse, diaper bag, car, etc. It also makes a really nice, simple gift for new parents. I’d love to give a bottle of this away! Again, leave a comment in this post for a chance to win.

*If you are sensitive to scents, even of the natural variety, substitute 25 drops of grapefruit seed extract for the oil. Find it at your local health food store, most likely near the spirulina.

swap numero uno

After I posted about how to roast your own coffee beans, Amber from Amber’s Ambry contacted me about swapping some of our delicious coffee beans for a few bars of her handmade soap. Needless to say, it was not at all difficult for us to part with a pint of our beans.

In exchange for home-roasted coffee beans, Italian Seasoning blend, baker’s twine and a few packages of hand-stamped gift tags, Amber hooked us up!

When my package arrived, it felt just like Christmas. I had no idea what little goodies she had thrown in. Stoked! Three bars of soap: lavender oatmeal, sweet orange, and sweetgrass & cedar. We have only used the lavender oatmeal soap thus far and it is so silky and creamy and has a very nice lather.

The hand balm is my new best friend. It’s scented with essential oils of Bergamot & Texas Cedarwood and Holy Toledo it is so rad. My hands were literally cracked from winter weather and a three-week long sewing marathon. Within two days my hands were back to being silky smooth. And that cedarwood smells so amazingly good, like I’m sitting by a warm fire sipping a hot toddy in a Colorado ski lodge type of good. Or perhaps listening to Wild Flag at Doug Fir. Heaven. We have yet to use the scrub, but the ingredient list is so decadent that I have no doubt it’ll rock my world. I’m super excited to get my exfoliate on later this week.

If you’re not yet familiar with Amber’s blog, I highly suggest giving it a read. Amber is a hip crafter, has mad needle skills and is an all-around handy super mom. Oh, and she looks darn good in an apron. Annnnnnd is a wonderful photographer. She made my goods look infinitely cooler than I ever could. Thank you Amber!

PS – I really enjoyed swapping goods with a fellow blogger. It made me feel all friendship-bracelet warm and fuzzy (Hi Felicity!). If you ever see a small something that you like on Bambino Steps, please feel free to email me and we can talk swap.
