polar express pajamas

I made another pair of Oliver & S Bedtime Story Pajamas, this time in a killer stripe and polka dot combo, that screamed “PJS” to me the moment I laid eyes on them.

The pattern worked up even faster the second time around, which was great considering I was working under a tight deadline. In addition to needing these jams, I made them specifically for the Mt. Hood Rail Road Polar Express train ride that we went on over the weekend.

We surprised him with a copy of the book the evening before, and when we woke up from his nap the next day, we put him in his new pajamas (clearly still half-asleep), and off we went to ride the Polar Express.

Each child was given a golden ticket,

and a conductor came by to punch it.

The chefs made us hot chocolate and cookies (we brought our own gluten-free), we sang Christmas carols, and then stopped at the North Pole to let Santa and his elves aboard.

Santa stopped and chatted with each and every child. It was truly magical. When we pulled up to the train station on the way back, it was snowing! And kept snowing for the majority of the ride home.

I hope you are having so much fun celebrating this holiday season, and most of all, making time to rest and relax with your loved ones. It is too easy for me to be in Manic Whirlwind Mode the closer we get to Christmas Day, but all I have to do is stop at look at the above picture, or watch my son’s eyes light up every time we plug-in the Christmas lights, to remember to stop and savor the moment.

Happy Holidays!

craft fair

My sister and I will be hocking our wares at the Santa Mouse Holiday Craft Bazaar tomorrow from 9:30am-4:00pm. If you’re in the area, please stop by! I wanted to snap better photos of what I’ll be selling, but this is me right now:

Ack!*

I’ll be wearing my cat socks for good luck. Fingers crossed! Expect a full report (and better photos) next week.

Until then, happy holiday crafting!

things we do after nap: animal hospital

Twenty-seven months is such a fun age. My son’s imagination has really started to take flight, and we have had so much fun with imaginative play these days. It is so simple to use common items you have around the home to create a whole world of play. Simply follow your child’s lead, or get a bit creative yourself; it really makes playtime that much more fun. Today I thought I would share with you one of our games that we play: animal hospital.

Backstory: After my son woke up from his nap the other week, he asked to ride the MAX (our city-wide light rail system). That wasn’t in the cards for us, so we pretended instead. We “rode” the train downtown to visit Daddy at work, made a pit stop at Pioneer Courthouse Square, did a bit of shopping, and finally made our way to the Children’s Museum. One of my son’s favorite activities at the museum is their Pet Hospital play station. We happened to be near my son’s basket of stuffed animals, and as he poked one with his toe, I said, “Oh, does Ladybug have a boo-boo?” My son’s eyes lit up and the game began. I quickly gathered a few supplies, which was so fun to put together on the fly, but you could probably think up even more fun and elaborate ideas if planned ahead of time.

Animal Hospital Supplies

  • Stuffed animals
  • Small basket
  • Fabric scraps (leftover from these pants)
  • Empty salve tin
  • Empty squeeze bottle

The Play-by-Play

My son would pick up a stuffed animal and say “Ow! Ow!” and then we would get to work cleaning the wound with the “water” in the squeeze bottle, applying salve and finally a bandage. In no time his entire animal collection was on the mend. At my son’s direction, some even went to the chiropractor where he gave them gentle adjustments, some received kisses and…

Some patients received mama’s milk.

I was completely fascinated as I watched my son gather animals and line them up in front of Mama Elephant, “healing” them with her milk. It was the sweetest surprise and so incredibly interesting. Imaginative, open-ended play with a toddler never ceases to amaze me.

What games are you playing?

pickles the fire cat: in action

Oh you guys, his Pickles the Fire Cat costume, in action, was even better than I imagined.

We went trick-or-treating in my parent’s neighborhood and Pickles was thrilled out of his gourd.

He didn’t have any candy, but I’m not sure any toddler needs sugar to be jazzed.

Hope you had a wonderful celebration!

PS – just has I had predicted, we quite literally found the missing mittens the very next day. My son just appeared with them, out of the blue. Sigh.
