a gift for a new mama

Those early days after my son’s birth were magical, emotional and overwhelming. Pre-birth nesting habits consisted mainly of being in total denial of my son’s arrival by sipping cool drinks while window-shopping at local boutiques and having lunch with friends. With labor as my main focus, I spent a considerable amount of time lying in bed, air conditioner blaring over my huge pregnant belly, listening to Marie Mongan chant the rainbow colors until I fell fast asleep for siesta numero diez of the day. Incredibly important, yes, though virtually all of my efforts went into preparing for labor; pretty close to zero were spent educating myself about how to care for a newborn and equally as important, myself.

The Gift

So a couple months back when an old friend gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, I knew I wanted to give a simple gift that focused on new mama care. A lesson that I personally (and quickly) learned was of great importance.

Postpartum my midwife gave me a bottle of calendula tincture and instructed me to squirt a dropperful in my peri-bottle to aid in the healing process. Calendula is a wonderful healing flower that reduces inflammation, controls bleeding, is anti-viral, and is an overall healing super plant. While I didn’t have a fresh bottle of the tincture to give, I did have beautiful dried flowers. In addition to using a peri-bottle, I also took many sitz baths, in a wonderful infusion of incredibly interesting herbs, flowers, and I believe even roots and bark. My husband would brew up big pots of this, letting it simmer all day long, and made our house smell so incredibly earthy and wonderful. My gift was an extremely humble (and much less involved) version.

Postpartum Calendula Flower Infusion

Method #1

  1. Place dried petals in a pot and cover with water.
  2. Bring to a slight boil, reduce heat to very low and let simmer for about 20 minutes. Turn off heat and let it rest for several hours.
  3. Strain; pour into sitz bath water. Relax.

Method #2

  1. Place dried petals in a clean sock.
  2. Attach to bath faucet with a rubber band or string.
  3. Turn on hot water and fill tub to sitz bath level.
  4. Wring out sock into tub, or place in tub during bath. Relax.

I also made up a little bottle of herbal hand sanitizer for visitors and those on-the-go moments when clean hands are a must.

Several bags of my favorite nursing tea.

A jar of delicious high protein Spiced Nuts & Seeds, along with the recipe (granola would also be a nice)

A handmade bib.

And a bundle of ceremonial sage for purification and healing.

A couple months after my son was born I was able to go to a Closing of the Bones ceremony, a womb wrapping ceremony which “honors the postpartum mother. It is a setting of intentional space, to nurture the mother after her passage through giving birth, as an initiation into the flowering of motherhood and beyond.” I will not be able to adequately express the experience I had during this ceremony. Whew. It was a life changing experience, highly emotional, highly spiritual. Unbelievably…necessary.

I was so pleased with how this gift turned out and it really got my brain swirling for other interesting, mama-centric gifts. Do you have a special go-to new parent gift or Mother’s Day gift? How will you be honoring yourself and other mamas this weekend?

P.S. – There are still two days left to enter the anniversary giveaway which includes some of the items mentioned in this post.

7 little known facts about moi

Yippee! I won an award! While catching up on my blogs I happened across a post from Carolyn of Fake it While You Make it, who awarded me with the Stylish Blog Award. Awesome! Carolyn is also awesome, and she recently made this killer belt. Okay, in keeping with the rules of the award, here are seven things you may not know about me.

  1. I was in the Junior-Olympic roller skating program.
  2. My husband and I met on a film set.
  3. I am absolutely terrified of raccoons. Petrified. I can barely type this. I’m freaking out! And I found out very recently that the same holds true for opossums. Any coyotes.
  4. My son’s birth lasted 56 hours. I birthed him naturally, mainly at home, and finally at a birthing center. I cannot possibly say enough good things about Hypnobirthing or this magical music. I also can’t say enough good things about placenta encapsulation.
  5. I was a Bluebird and Campfire Girl. I named myself Ewok which stood for Earth, Water, Outdoors and Kindness, and because, well, I was obsessed with ewoks. I still have my vest.
  6. In my early twenties I topped the scale at 230 pounds. Yup. I can’t even believe I just wrote that for the world to see, but I felt compelled to share for some reason (!?!). While I’m not currently that size, I am a far cry from the small size 6 on my wedding day, which I compare myself to regularly. I try each and every day not to let my weight dictate how much love I give myself. This is difficult for me and I hate beyond hate that it is.
  7. At the age of 19 I moved to San Francisco on a whim. I lived there for a couple years and came back to Portland with hot pink hair, a nose ring, a kitten, and a tattoo of a kitten.

And because I’m on a roll…

  • When I was 17 I sang the National Anthem at the Memorial Coliseum…for a dance competition. I have danced the majority of my life. I think I’ll do a little dancing right now!

And here is the short list of darling bloggers whose journeys I love to read and would like to give the Stylish Award to:

Love, Remember

a note and a circus elephant

So…I’m still around! We recently got back from a trip to the coast (Florence, Oregon in case you were wondering – lots of incredible farm fresh food, sea air, embroidering, Trivial Pursuit, some sand boarding, great family fun time!) and I’ve been in crunch mode gearing up for Baby’s first birthday*. I’ve been so immersed in glue and newspaper and scissors flying at every spare moment I have (which is barely any with a teething/*this close* to walking babe). I started out with these grand plans in my head, but as the party is almost here, I have to get real. Somehow I don’t think I’ll have time to replace our backyard with a giant lake, willow trees and a sailboat. Rats. Or hand make all of the 10,000 presents I had planned. Double rats. I promise to take pictures of the big day, as I have created quite a lot…at least it feels that way. I’m particularly happy that I’ve managed to use a lot of re-purposed materials. Cheap (or in some instances free!) and eco-friendly. In the interim, I’ll show you something else that I have been working on:

I am loosely participating in Amy’s newest Tie One On circus apron theme. I’ve selected fabric, a pattern and cut it all out. I’ve embroidered these lovely elephants for the pockets (free, fabulous pattern from So September) and my next step is to sew.it.all.together. This week at sewing class was the first time we actually started sewing. Like, on fabric, real fabric, with the intention of creating a bathrobe. I’m completely intimidated by clearing off enough space and sewing the apron by myself, in my home…for whatever reason I feel like I’ll need a huge chunk of uninterrupted time to concentrate and swear and stuff of that nature, and that’s just not realistic. Submissions are due by September 5; still time to participate if you’re up for the challange. We’ll see if I make it.

* If you’ve read this far, dang, thanks. Here’s some more blathering: this summer has been freaking weird. As soon as the weather changed and the air conditioner flicked on, I was bombarded with all of these smells and memories of last summer. That long, miserably hot, incredibly bizarre, intense summer. Honestly, this summer I almost felt pregnant again, as if re-living Summer 2009. I’ve been hormonal and nostalgic and sleep deprived, still sleep deprived. This year. Wow. This long, but not at all long, crazy, joyful, painful, hard, awesome, freaking ohmygod year. I could write a novel, but I’ll stop here. I just freaking love my baby love so freaking fiercely. I cannot believe he’ll be ONE tomorrow. One. *sigh*
